but how did all of this get started and whois responsible for information competency? in 1974, paul zurkowski is credited as havingcoined the term “information literacy.†information competency and information literacyare terms that are often used synonymously. since 1974, information competency has beendefined by numerous academic organizations and associations of professional librarians.today, the basic definition of information competency is widely agreed on. for instance, the california counseling andlibrary faculty issues committee of the california community colleges academic senate, definesinformation competency as “the ability to find, evaluate, use, and communicate informationin all its various formats. it combines aspects
of library literacy, research methods andtechnological literacy.†similarly, the american library associationand it’s association of college and research libraries (acrl) has defined information competencyas “a set of abilities requiring individuals to "recognize when information is needed andhave the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information,â€also noting that “information literacy also is increasingly important in the contemporaryenvironment of rapid technological change and proliferating information resources.†today, the american association of communitycolleges calls on libraries and librarians directly. librarians are professionals thathave earned masters degrees in the science
