Olive Garden Myrtle Beach Sc
(rock music) - about to board a flight. - we got up at about 3:15, left at 3:45. (guitar music) - day two out here in caboat querencia golf club.
Olive Garden Myrtle Beach Sc, looking forward to thepractice round today, and get some good work in. - guys you probably have, like i said as a team, more rounds logged on this golf course
competitively than anybody else. so use that to your advantage guys, i mean, today and gettingto know the golf course, just another round that you're logging. it's confirming what you already know. so take advantage of that, have fun. - we've got a really good group. especially the group that went to cabo. we have a lot of fun.
- it's a great group of guys. we wanna have a like mindsetin terms of being competitive, being tough, wanting to win. but in terms of theirpersonality, in general, we want some characters on the team. - that does not look like an olive garden. hey, does that not looklike an olive garden, over there on the left? you know it does.
- hey, tad i got a joke for you. why didn't the skeleton go to prom? because he had nobody to go with. - i'm concentrating. - you're in the zone. - so is that the, that'sthe sea of cortez, right? - i don't know what that is. - and not the pacific? - there were some whalesout there just a minute ago.
good to see that. - you saw them? - they were doing some jumping. - just got done with18, our practice round. about to go hit some rangeballs, get ready for tomorrow. let's go, reb. (upbeat music) - hey what's up? it's connor davis.
we're here for the querenciacabo collegiate tournament. we're at jack and mary mccann's house. this is our host home, let's check it out. so here we are walkingdown the main steps. i'd like you guys to check out this view. the master of thekitchen, mr. ben wolcott. - what up? what's going on? some fruits, water, milk.
alright, let's check out the pantry now. here we've got justabout everything in here. some san pellegrino forthe finer taste in life. - hey quit playing around, let's go and check out the pool. - let's go. - as you can see there'sno room or glass here. you just kinda walk out. it's no big deal, we don'tneed glass in our homes.
- what up guys? - what's up? - didn't see you there. got the waterfall right here, pretty cool feature. - alright guys, thanks forchecking our host crib. yours truly, we'll seeyou out on the course. hey, go deep. - get outta here.
(laughter) - see you in the morning. hands in here. - [voiceover] that's all i got. - the querencia cabo collegiateis a really good field. it's probably the best in college golf. - your talent's getting showcased against the best that is available and at the same time youhad to bring your a game.
you can't mess aroundwith teams like these. these teams are really good, and they came to play too. so, you definitely can't sleep on an opportunity like that. - you definitely can't win the tournament on the first day, but you can definitely lose the tournament on the first day.
'cause you can get so far behind, at the start that it'shard to catch back up. especially in that fieldbecause the teams are so good. - [voiceover] knowing theimportance of a strong start, junior ben wolcott needed to overcome an early obstacle to getoff on the right foot. - you can call it a rocky start, but i hit a two iron off the tee, and it was left and going left.
and i was like, "okay, thisis not a very good start." and then i get up there and it is against a rock in the desert area left of the fairway. - from a coaching standpointi looked at all his options he didn't have a wholelot going for him there. - the rock doesn't bother you? - no. - so me and coach elliswere going over my options.
and i was like, "i wannapull off the bubba watson, "you know go for it, gobig or go home first hole." - you know it ended up turning out well. he advanced it off therock, about 70 or 80 yards, was actually able to get a drop at the other side of the desert. and got it up and down for par. - i don't know how, but how many? - just a routine four.
- off the rock - still on the first hole and then have something like that and then get a fortunate break and then almost make the wedge shot and come out with a four. i definitely gained momentum from that. - [voiceover] the rebs were rolling and head coach chris malloy was there
to direct the driving force. - in golf, the college coaches are able to talk to you and come and help you with your shots and stuff. - you need a confidentputt on the right lip. and it goes in. no doubt. - it's really unique, in other events you might have a caddie or something,
but having a coach is areally cool experience to maybe calm you down. - me and coach malloy, we're very similar as we can be very serious when it comes to golf but also have fun with it, too and joke around a lot. so i think that helpsus work together well, as far as, it's not likeclashing personalities. we kind of work together the right way.
- these are the putts. these are the kind of cut putts you always make, too. - [voiceover] good job. good birdie. good job, guys. - it is a business trip. we're down there for areason, and that's to win. but you also want to take a look around,
and enjoy where you are. you're in cabo. - we're at the nicest placei've every been (chuckles). - listen, this isn't life and death. a lot of times, i've got tomake a little highthearted. got to have a little perspective on where they are. life is good. (salsa music)
- i don't handle hot stuff well. - alright, forrest. i need your water. - [voiceover] (mumbles) jalepeno peppers - i'm gonna die. - [voiceover] do it. arriba! (forrest laughs) - oh, you're tearing up?
- so did you know on a coca-cola can the top part of thistab is actually invented to fit a straw. - [voiceover] the rebels would build on their success from day one. and fire out of the gates the first four holesof their second round. (guitar techno music) - yeah, so we got offto a really good start
the second day, we were 10 under par. at that point, you're hitting really good golf shots, so you'rehitting at a lot more pins. you had a lot more birdie chances. - [chris] you can usually tell, especially with golf, the body language. and when things are going good, a lot of people had a littlemore pep in their step. that's what we preach.
we want to see good body language. good confident attitudes, andthen the good golf will come. - that's going to workout nicely, i think. - i guess startingaround you're confident. - chase, chase, go in. - the big thing is sometimes when people are playing well and they couple under par or several on par, theykind of start playing not as aggressive.
- attaboy - the thing that coachmalloy wants us to do is to keep that aggressive mindset. - [voiceover] good mull, good work. - i know especially when i'm playing well, i just see my nextopportunities coming up. if i do something well previously, i think that i'm going to do it again. it's just how confidence works.
and it just gives you a little edge in your step maybe for the holes remaining and left throughout. - [voiceover] althoughole miss would struggle on their way into the clubhouse, they still posted the thirdbest score of the day. - probably the tougherstretch of the golf course is what we play the best. golf's a funny game, that can happen.
but we got around to another stretch of the golf course andgave some strokes back, but it can happen out there. - there's some things that went wrong towards the end, but i think we gained a lot of positives from that round. - [voiceover] the peaks and valleys of the round serve as a reminder that a golfer doesn't justplay against the field.
they must also competeagainst the field of play. - querencia's is a reallyreally good golf course and it's very demanding and it lets you know where you are. if you hit a couple of wayward golf balls, you're not going to hit a tree and have it kicked downand kicked back out on the fairway or kickedin the rough here. you're normally reteeing.
- since it is in the desert, there's not much grass. so a lot of times, it'spretty tight off the tee. if you don't hit it in the fairway, you could be in thedesert, and it's not fun to play from the desert. there's a lot of cactuses, or cacti, excuse me. - that golf course, itplays really firm and fast. the greens were really good, though.
the best greens i've seen in a long time. - you have to positionyourself on the greens, because the greens werereally firm and really fast. so you have to be in the right spot. because if you're not, or if you're above the hole, you're putting really defensively. - tee shots and putting were the hardest objectives of the week.
but yeah, it's a great trail here, it really is a good golf course. i'm glad that we got to do this so people could kind of see what we were playing on, how difficult it really was. (bachata music) - downtown san jose del cabo, looking at some shops and little stores
down here, getting some souvenirs. (mariachi cornets) - picked up a little sombrero from one-week-old son booth. he got to grow into it a little bit. we're excited for his little collection of mexican artifacts. (mariachi music) - [voiceover] while the players
set their sights on thetop of the leaderboard, coach malloy foresees a bright future for the ole miss golf program. - the first time i satdown with ross bjork, he shared his vision for what he wanted. it truly aligned with what my vision was, and that's to compete with the best, and to do that, you have to play the best golf courses, you have to
play against the bestteams in the country. we are very, very fortunate. one of the major reasonsthat i'm back here as the golf coach at ole miss is because we're trying to be the best. - it's nice to go to a place like cabo and play, but at the same time we think of it as a business trip
is what coach malloy calls it. and so we're there to have fun and relax and of course there's theocean and pools and sunshine. but at the same time,we're there to play golf. we're there to win. - looking back on it,i was able to see that the whole field struggled that day, it just played really tough. some of the pins were really tough.
so looking back, we didn't play as bad as we all felt like coming off the course. the course was just playing a little bit tougher that day. - [voiceover] once again, you had a lot of these today. i think it's that. and the flight at nine? dead at it. i mean, just a nice stock nine
at the dead center ofthis green is perfect. - when we got done with the third round, i didn't think we had played quite as well as we could have. but then i also noticed whilei was looking at the scores how not a lot of teams played did well. this one was playing really tough. i think that really gives you the edge, "hey we can play with these guys,
we can play with anybody." - [voiceover] although the rebels finished in the middle of the pack, they were still able to best five nationally ranked teams. - oh, i think we're going a lot of good things now. our team's starting to mature. the freshman are starting to play.
they're starting to gather some momentum there, confidence-wise. - [voiceover] can't getthem all back at once. let's just be patient here. get you a couple of good shots here and get outta here. - they need to believe that they belong, and playing those kind of fields and to finish and not play our best
and still kind of compete, you know, that's where we getbetter week in, week out. when they start believingit like coach and i do, they're going to get it. - i've played better each day, so it definitely helped with my confidence playing my best golf the last day. - and that field, to finish where we were, and with the season we've had thus far,
i would definitely consider it a success. and a step in the right direction, that's what i told them rightwhen we got back from cabo. when we were at the airport still, i said "it's a step inthe right direction." and if they use thisconfidence moving forward, then they have some special opportunities laying out in front of them. - we really showed, especially that second day,
what we're capable of. i'm really excited going forward. we've got a few terms left this spring, and then scc, so i'm really excited. hopefully we can continue the momentum we got in cabo. - [voiceover] forrest. - oh, sorry. - i'm sorry, kyle.
didn't mean to do that? - jack and mary mccann's, and we're here for the cabo collegiate tournament. god, i messed it up. i'll do it again. - don't sting me, please - ready, set (whooping) (clapping)
