West Palm Beach Property Appraiser, your time. if you're still here, i"m assuming that youare interested in the topic i am talking about. my company has set over 600 world record pricesselling things at auction, everything from sports memorabilia to vintage comic books.
i have conducted auctions from as far awayas sacramento, california to the west, to west palm beach, florida to the east, andfargo, north dakota to the north, and destin, florida to the south. i have been all over the country and i doknow auctioneers everywhere and can help you with what you have got to sell. there is almost nothing that i have not soldor my friends haven't sold. everything from nuclear power power plantright down to vintage comic books. so let's talk about something that's importantwhen you find yourself in a process of hiring an auctioneer.
i have a whole page about this on my website, but let me just let me just summarize some of it. the first thing you want to do is look andsee if that auctioneer has a good reputation, and one of the ways to do that is to lookat the better business bureau and see if there has been any complaints and if they have beendealt with. another place to look would be the nationalauctioneers association (auctioneers.org). you go to the national auctioneers associationyou can search and see if that auctioneer is a member. it doesn't mean the auctioneer is perfect, but it means they are bound by a code of ethics.
there is an 18 point code of ethics currently, they are re-writing this code of ethics right now so it will be updated and very recentso any time in the near future as i'm recording this it is april of 2016 we should have anew code of ethics in the next few months. but auctioneers that in the naa are boundto this code of ethics, that's a good thing. you want to see if that auctioneer is insured,if they are licensed and if they are bonded. the insurance becomes very important becauseif they have the auction at your residence you want to make sure that you are coveredif someone slips and falls or something like that. if the auctioneer is taking your items intotheir possession you want to look to see if
they have something called bailees insurance,or inland marine insurance. those are very important to make sure yourassets are covered while they are in the auctioneers possession. you would would like to look and see if thatauctioneer has some sort of experience selling the type of asset you have. if you have a bunch of coins, and they havenever sold coins before, that might not be a real good idea. now, i"m going to say that when we sat over500 world records selling vintage comic books we had never sold comic books before, butwe were very good at marketing.
you want to look and see how well your auctioneerknows how to market. one standard, and probably the gold standardfor that right now in the auction world is do they hold the amm designation from thenational auctioneers association? amm stands for auction marketing manager, and not only do i hold the designation, i was the chairman of the re-write committeethat re-wrote that class. my committee put together a wonderful programthat's been extremely well received by the public at large and by auctioneers everywhere. amm is the gold standard in auction marketing. it teaches auctioneers how to get your itemsin front of the right buyers.
another thing to look for is to see if thatauctioneer that you are dealing with has ever had any convictions. if you have the ability in your area you mightwant to look and see if there is any felony or police records on the auctioneer. that would be a red flag for sure, to makesure that you maybe want to look somewhere else. i would suggest that you look to see if theauctioneer is full time. i think that part time people can do a goodjob but i think it is more likely that a person that is doing this as their sole means ofincome will have the time to devote to your
auction. if you don't see them as having a full time,i think i would stear clear. look to see if your auctioneer is keepingup on the latest information by attending conferences and shows, educational designationsfrom the national auctioneers association. that would include things like the amm thati talked about. the certified auctioneers institute is the highest designation that the naa has. that might be a good sign, the certified estate specialist, graduate personal property appraiser
