haven't got to lap one yet.>> that's the story about this. we will line up the first time as we take the green flagwith 40 cars. these guys are going to practice in cool conditions and now they're going tocome in hot conditions. it could be wild. >> hot conditions. this is as hot as it canget. look at that. four wide to the checkered flag. regan smith by a nose is able to winthe race. i expect you will see the same thing today. side by side racing to the checkeredflag. >> when you come to a place like daytona,it's the season opener, these drivers, most haven't been behind the wheel of a car sincewe left homestead in november. today, what is the balance of patience and aggressionas you try to be where you need to be for
the final lap?>> i think most of them haven't practiced much. i think that's the way that the superspeedway stuff has become. don't tear your car up. as we go into the race, you will have40 cars with most of the field not having practiced much. some guys with experiencein the back. >> kevin hit on a key point. the cars practicedin cool conditions. handling goes away when the temperature goes up and there's sun onthe track. they will run tight in the pack. they will be side by side. the cars will bea handful. >> we have 40 hungry drivers. two of themin the booth that have combined for three daytona 500 wins. we will have fun today.we're glad you are with us on fox sports 1.
>>> back live. good to have you with us onfox sports 1. we open up 2015 for the nascar xfinity series. cars have rolled off the grid.crews are making their final preparations. we talked about qualifying earlier today.on the poll for the 11th time in his career, austin dillon, running 20 races this season.a limited schedule for justin marks. row two, chad boat who had anxiety alongside brendangaughan. welcome in pit reporters. good afternoon, matt.>> qualifying was exciting putting austin dillon on pole for the second time in hisxfinity career. one big plus from winning the poll, lane choice. he will move from theinside to the outside because his teammate brendan gaughan is in row two. they will tryto team up. the orders to his spotter, keep
me near the front. you are never safe anywhere, but odds are greater you are in a safer position up front. remember, he has not won an xfinitycompetition in nearly two and a half years. >> matt, one of the joys of the xfinity seriesis the grooming of young talent. in the 20 car for joe gibbs racing today is 18-year-olderik jones. he is considered a can't miss prospect in this garage. he ran three xfinityraces last year and was top three in all three. last night, he finished second in the truckseries. he says staying out of trouble is the key. at the end of the race, i feel likewe can win. he wasn't bragging. he is that good.>> chase elliott is coming off a dream season. winning the championship and three wins. that'snot good enough for him. he told me this morning,
he wants to better himself. daytona is onthat list. in both daytona races last year he finished outside the top ten, somethinghe didn't do very often. he said he took notes. he has a new plan. that plan, of course, involveshis new crew chief on top of the pit box. adam?>> thank you. this is a big year for ernie cope. this is the first time in a number ofyears that he has been crew chief for a team that's going for the championship. he hasbeen one of those all-star crew chiefs. >> i love the way we're kicking off today'srace. we start a new era with the xfinity series. j.j. yeley, justin marks, we haven'tmentioned kyle busch and brad keselowski, a couple of guys we know will race their wayto the front. so many unanswered questions
and great story lines.>> those two drivers combined for 12 wins a year ago.>> when you mix up the talent and have the young guys come in with enthusiasm, they mightdo something that they shouldn't. but it's exciting to watch.>> you will find out, sitting up here and watching people do stuff they shouldn't dois way more fun than when you are on the track and they do it.>> a degree. i'm glad i don't have to pay those bills.>> you have been down that right. >> yeah. that's definitely an expensive qualifyingsession for sure. >> you saw our toyota camry pace car. leadingthe 40 nascar xfinity cars around the 2 1/2
mile tri-oval. the off season is over. in2015, put it in the air and let's get down to business at daytona.>> you saw brendan gaughan dive to the bottom of the racetrack. that's going to give ourpole sitter austin dillon a chance to do the same. two team cars will line up at the front.>> as you see, austin moving back and forth, right now he is trying to manipulate the twolanes to keep himself in the front. you got these guys coming from the back of the pack.they are pushing and shoving and really this is the time you can make up the most groundfrom the rear of the carry the momentum. >> we watched kyle busch in practice makemoves that were incredible. we know he will do that in the race. he is three wide tryingto push his way to the front.
>> nines out of ten, the aggressor will bethe winner. sometimes it doesn't work out. the guy that's conservative wins. we are threewide. >> the guy leading that on the outside, tydillon, who has been knifing through the field in our first couple of laps.>> absolutely. when that top line is formed up like that, it's going to carry more momentumthan the bottom. right now those guys are coming so fast that he can't block.>> how busy is austin up there trying to watch two lanes besides his and block them all andkeep the lead? it's difficult. >> it's very difficult. because you are tryingto drive forward at 195, 200 miles an hour. the next thing you know, you are looking bacsmore than forward. they are going for it right
after the bat.>> i spent time in l.a. last fall. i ran on the 405. we were three wide.>> they are not messing around. this is three wide all the way back through the field. thisis the kind of racing that the fans love to see. i'm so glad that these guys are racingthis hard right after the bat. >> wow. i said ty dillon was on the move.up 25 positions in first two laps of the race. dale earnhardt, junior, started dead last.he is up inside the top 20 early. >> how does he do it? he finds a gap, a line.he makes his way from the back to front. all the way from last to the top 15.>> i think the kid leading this race is a kid that is probably a little bit underrated.he had a great season last year, drove up
to the front. gained a lot of experience.he will be a force to reckoned with. >> these cars are handling as good as theywill all day long. the track is fresh, green. there's also a lot of grip right now in thetires. these guys are able to make these moves. as the cars start to go away, tires get slippery, temperature comes up, that's going to be harder and harder.>> as you see, if you go back to the lead car and look at the front of the grill, hehas stuff on the front of the grill. that's very daytona. as you start the races, youget trash on the grill. he has a ton of trash on the grill. if gets where he is at, thatwrapper will have him in big trouble. >> i'm sure he loves m & ms but not now. tryto explain how
-- they have a very small opening in the frontto get the temperatures where they need them. >> nascar really wants us to not push andget that draft. so they limited grill space we have can have open. that grill is smalland they have made it as pretty much as small as they can without the engine blowing upso you can't push. >> austin dillon who led the first coupleof laps is fifth ot inside lane. his brother a couple of spots in front of him.>> didn't ty start 33rd? deep in the -->> up 24 positions. >> what a move for him.>> i think you are seeing right now the guys that want to race hard right from the beginning.you are seeing the backpack start to form
as we go through the first part of the race.>> haven't talked about the man that won this race one year ago, regan smith started 12thtoday. he is in the second position. also up in that lead mix, talked about chris buescher.ryan reed in the lead mix as well. >> this is a great place for those kids toshine. they have a lot of experience that they have gained from last year. they knowthat when they come to the super speedway races that this is their most realistic chanceto win races and make something happen and really shine. in the end, we all know thisis the biggest race of the year for the xfinity series as it is for the daytona 500.>> you talked about chris buescher and the fact that he is the real deal. he went fromnot qualifying at daytona here a year ago
to leading the race now. he was second attalladega. he catches on fast. >> absolutely.>> a couple of old friends working together. bubba wallace is driving for jack roush gettinga push from kyle busch. >> you can see kyle is back and forth withbubba. that was a close one. >> when you come through that tri-oval, it'snot the place to push and shove. you can see the curvature of the bumpers. you have abouta six-inch window that you can push straight. in these cars you have more sponge than thecup cars. that window of opportunity to push correctly is very, very small. let alone inthat tri-oval. >> look who is behind busch, it's daniel suarez.23-year-old, third career start, he is working
his way through the field at daytona. thatis impressive. >> we talked about brad keselowski. he pushedhis way up there as well. daniel suarez needs to prove something today. he made a mistakein qualifying. he caused a crash. if can he get through this race clean, people will lookat him differently when he leaves. won't be remembered for that crash. he will be rememberedfor his performance during the race. >> last saturday, he finished second, topten last night in the camping world truck series. here he is running for a championshipin his rookie campaign in the xfinity series. so far, so good. the mexico native finds himselfrunning eighth. >> the start couldn't have gone much better.it's had it all.
>> it was exciting, that's for sure.>> we're only seven laps in to the 120 that make up today's event. it's the alert todayflorida 300. live in daytona beach, florida. the season opener for the nascar xfinity series.there. there's a guy out there whose making his own run at glory. making a name for himselfin a sport where your name and maybe a number are what define you. somewhere in that packis a driver that can intimidate the intimidator. a driver with a move that'll one up the passin the grass. in one of those cars is a driver that could out talk jaws. a guy that can takethe king 7 and make it 8. heck. maybe even 9. maybe they're in the back of the pack.maybe they're stalking the leader down the home stretch. waiting to pounce. waiting tomake that first move toward becoming a legend.
make no mistake about it. they're out there.i guarantee it. welcome to the nascar xfinity series.>>> ten laps in. he started 34th. the man that finished fifth in the championship oneyear ago has pushed his way to the lead. ty dillon making the outside lane work.>> that's the first lap he led here. that's got to feel good.>> that was moments ago. he slid down to the inside lane. that means buescher is behindhim. >> watch this on the outside. kyle busch hasbeen really pushing bubba wallace. you saw the contact in the tri-oval. they are pushingfor the lead. >> you can really see how these cars, theylove the tandem draft. they have to do everything
they can-- it's almost hard to get detached when you are in certain situations where you see allthese cars on the outside line stacked up. it's hard for kyle to get detached from theguy's bumper. it's almost a magnet as you get attached to him.>> it looks like kyle is nervous, bumping him. that's the rule, you can't stay attachedto the car in front of you. he is doing an amazing job of keeping contact but yet notbeing totally locked up. >> i wish i could explain to you how nerve-rackingit is to sit in this car, and when you add a rule like that where you can't just lieon the guy's bumper and you have to come off and go back on and come back off again, that'sharder than anything, because you have to
sit there and make sure you are not attachedto the guy's bumper. it's very difficult. he is doing a great job.>> this is textbook rule following by kyle busch. he is able to push bubba to the front, like kevin said, a difficult job what he is doing. he had bubba sideways a couple of times.i'm sure bubba is enjoying leading the race. i'm not so sure how much he enjoyed gettingthe lead. >> a lot of the young kids they love the speedwayracing. they love the pushing and shoving. if you don't like to be pushed and shoved, you are probably not going to be very successful at this type of racing.>> how good is jack roush feeling today? he has three young kids, bubba wallace is runningfor rookie of the year, who just went to the
front. all of the kids doing a nice job today.also ryan reed and, of course, we talked earlier about chris buescher. you have had so muchsuccess here at daytona. you know how key communication is. listen to this from team54 and team 6 moments ago. >> on the straightaway, get on the inside.>> i think what -->> tight on your door. kb says out on the straightaway, follow him in the corner.>> i think what he is hoping to do is get a run against him in the corner and then gaphim on the straightaway. playing around, seeing what kind of momentum that can create.>> i think when you look to see what they are trying to do, they are trying to slowthe inside lane down. as you go up the hill
and come off the corner, you can get a rundown the hill and allow kyle to push you down the back straightaway to where the side draftdoesn't slow the momentum down on the outside. >> he is doing it now. bubba separated fromthe inside line. look at run. kyle is pretty good. maybe bubba following his directionis a good idea. that's a toyota pushing a ford. at this point, you are trying to getto the front no matter how you get there. >> i think the thing about these two is theyknow each other really well from the truck days. even though they may be in differentmanufacturers, darrell trusts kyle pushing him. they have worked together so much.>> don't forget this about kyle busch. he started outside the top 30. right now, heis third.
>> kyle busch is one of those drivers thathe has his eye on those around him. you heard him talking about what he wanted from bubba.he has a rookie and teammate behind him in daniel suarez. he has to keep an eye on histemperature. his crew chief told him a moment ago, keep an eye on the temps. if you haveto dart out and get air to the car, do it. a lot to keep an eye on for the 54 of kylebusch right now. >> it makes me nervous when you catch a slowercar in the corner and have to go three wide. that difference in speed, having to adjustyour line, that's a recipe for disaster. the field did a great job working their way around.>> you dread where you catch those guys. you can see when it's coming to the tri-oval orcorner and that starts to happen and guys
weave in and out, it takes the slightest touch.>> we started side by side. we stayed that way for that lead pack. there's a number ofother drivers that have drifted back. chase elliott, dale earnhardt, junior, biding theirtime for the run here at daytona. right now it's ty dillon on top.>>> our drive to the 500 continues. the post-race edition of fox sports live is coming up afterthe live. >> plenty to cover. the nfl combine. our nflinsiders are there. we will have the details. >> we will have the latest on kurt busch'ssuspension. now we get back to daytona. first, some commercial messages.>>> traffic quiet today open speedway boulevard here in daytona beach, florida. you go overto daytona international speedway and things
totally different. they continue to run twowide and ten deep here at daytona international speedway. the world center of racing, hostingthe season opener for the nascar xfinity series. right now, ty dillon and the inside lane outfront with another young gun darrell wallace, junior, making his debut for the roushenwayorganization. >> you can see ty dillon had to work his wayup the track. leads the field above the lap car. kevin points out, there's three or fourslower cars up ahead. when they catch that group, it's when the intensity picks up.>> it makes us very nervous as drivers. where he standing up here stressed out about it.i know everybody at home is probably like, why do you talk about the lap cars? any timethe lanes start moving and snaking around
like that, it becomes treacherous quick.>> that lead pack is side by side. that's intense. we go back to the second pack, youcan see elliott sadler coming to the start/finish line there. those guys are single le.>> in the second pack that are single file, when you look at the scoring monitor, thoseguys can catch the pack in three or four laps when they line up. they are playing it safeback there. you have a couple lap cars in the middle of those two packs. that singlefile back, as long as the lead pack stays side by side, they can catch them.>> ked earlier about how stressful it is behind the wheel. it's always good to get friendlyadvice. listen to ty dillon's radio. >> how is everything? take a breather. getyour fingers warmed up.
>> try and keep going as best we can on thelead. outside corner. >> nice to be reminded that you have to keepon top of your game. ty has done an amazing job racing from the back to the front. hasn'tled here until today. >> when you hear that advice, that's verygood advice. that's what happens a lot of times in these races is people get lazy. theydon't pay attention to what's going on. you think you're in a safe spot. if you are inthe pack, you are never in a safe spot. something can happen at any moment.>> look at the push. you are right. lines move. things change. the handling goes away.you have to stay on top of that wheel. >> we mentioned-- d suarez.
>> that scared me.>> an anxious moment. suarez right now third in line in the outside lane.>> what a day. talk about an anxious moment. caught up in the qualifying wreck. they hadthree hours to prep his backup car and get that setup as close to the primary as possible.they did a great job. he is telling his team he is a little tight. started in the back.now he is behind his teammate. >> i think when you look-- when we talk about the 18 car, if he stays between kyle busch and brad keselowski, hewill have a good day. i wouldn't try to pass. i wouldn't try to move. here we go throughmore lap traffic. >> exactly. that's a great place for thatyoung man, personally after the trouble he
had during qualifying. log laps. do your job.stay on top of the wheel, end your game. don't give brad a hint of a hole to dive in.>> you know he will. >> not one hint. you are in a good spot. asa rookie, this is a race where if you have a fast car like daniel does, you can put yourselfin a position like that to capitalize on a good day. earn the trust of a lot of guysaround you. >> you saw the leaders go by the lap traffic.the differential in speed, more than ten miles per hour. speaks to what you talk to and whyyou get anxious when you watch them come up on slower vehicles.>> it changes the dynamic of that draft. see the cars bunched together more at the frontof the field. when you go around other cars,
it slows you down. it gives guys in the backa chance to pull up. it changes things when you catch lap traffic.>> another thing that happens is usually, the inside car gets a little bit of a hintof draft. that inside line will pick up. the accordion will start. that's when you havea start to shuffle things around and gain or lose positions.>> not surprising to see these two together. >> yeah. as this pack develops up in the frontand these guys continue to race, i'm the guy that-- i've been on both sides of the strategy. as they race all day up front, if they cankeep it together. they know where to put their cars. they have the experience they need todo. i like the front of the pack strategy.
>> we are closing on the one quarter pointin today's 300-mile race at daytona. it's the season opener for the nascar xfinity series.ty dillon out front at daytona.>> those two at the front change about every lap. ty dillon gets pushed ahead and kylegives bubba a shove. >> i tell you, that's just how our sport is.everybody realizes that if you are going to be-- if you are going to win, most likely you will need to be in the front of the pack.everybody is more aggressive it seems like in this race than they were last year, becausethey want to try to position themselves throughout the day to stay up front.>> big shove in the outside lane for darrell
wallace, junior, who led 12 laps here today.32 laps in at daytona. let's go fox sports 1 style and crank it up.>> the sights and sounds of daytona international speedway. a special thanks to our crew behindthe scenes that do such an amazing job throughout our budweiser speed week coverage. here weare, 33 laps in. we will bring in our crew chief larry mcreynolds. it won't be long beforethey come down pit road. >> a couple things i want to point out. ipersonally was going this far under green, i would go with four tires. you have to waiton fuel. this would make it where you can do it on one or two more stops. if some ofthe crew chiefs are thinking about just right side tires, the last thing the drivers wantto do is slide their tires coming on pit road.
the other thing for all of the drivers inthe race that are not competing in sprint cup, this will be the first time that theyand their crews will have to deal with the new pit road officing system where nascaris really monitoring different pit road rules as far as over the wall too soon or drivingthrough too many pit boxes coming in or leaving. >> i think when you look at what's gettingready to happen here, you are ready to pit under green and you see the second pack catchthe first pack because they don't want to lose the pack. they immediate to be as closeto the lead pack when they start coming to pit road so they don't lose the draft andlose what they think is a safe distance. they are trying to position themselves to pit.for me, this is the most nerve racking part.
everybody tries to start orchestrating pitstops. >> it's counting down. we think they willstop at lap 39 or so. they had pace laps before the race. we will stop early in the earlygoing. what i love about nascar, in the top six, we have two fords, two chevys and twotoyotas. >> right behind those top six, the seventhplace runner of brad keselowski. an interesting conversation talking strategy.>> come lap 41 with the 6. 54 should be lap 40.>> this could be work out several ways. if you have the majority of the pack pits first.you get a majority off pit road, they will take off. there's a lot of strategy that comesinto when you pit.
>> bubba left kyle busch hanging.>> when we get back, green flag pit stops. you are watching nascar on fox sports 1.>>> four tires for jones. >> back live. the first round of green flagpit stops is under way. the cycle of drivers coming down at lap 38 last year's winner regansmith among those. justin marks and also the 20 of erik jones getting service.>> everybody is getting nervous. they don't want to run out of gas. here comes anothergroup of them. you see tires smoking. there's guys carrying heavy speed there.>> daniel suarez, one of those coming on pit road. he was nearly sideways. what a messat pit entrance. >> as was brian scott. he slid his tires allthe way to the pit line. he has a flat right
front. hopefully, they will get four tireson that car. >> let's go to vince.>> kyle busch says the only reason the outside line has been moving is because he has beendoing all the work. they helped him out to help his balance. a four-tire change for kylebusch. all well so far for the 54. >> daniel suarez missed his pit. i would besurprised if this car can make it back to pits without blowing a tire. watch him smokethese tires. >> and he just totally blew by his pit. thisis why you have to practice getting on pit road. when it's game time like this, it becomesa really intense situation. >> brendaughan coming down now. we have seendrivers making pit stops under green. also
in bubba wallace, the same for ty dillon whohas been out front for 15 circuits today. >> ty dillon said his car was very good. temperaturesare good as well. they wanted to add tape to get more speed they could. up front, thepole sitter, his brother austin dillon, chassis adjustment trying to improve balance on hiscar. four tires for the 33. >> as those drivers exit pit road, matt, themajority of the front runners have now gotten their service under green. here is danielsuarez one lap late. >> good news for him, did he make it all theway around after sliding those tires. the crew was ready to service four tires here.this is just his third ever xfinity series race. it's a lot to take in. it's you havefor him. he just about stahls it on the exit.
>> rough day for daniel suarez, the rookieout of mexico, making his third career start in the xfinity series here today. crashedin qualifying earlier. went to a backup. worked his way into the top five. then an issue gettingon pit road. now he lost a ton of track position. now that things have cycled through, herewe are back on point. ty dillon has the race advantage.>> you are hearing pit road penalties from the trailer. nascar's new pit road surveillance.we're hearing that 51 of clements is going to receive a penalty as is 01 of landon cassill.a tire got away from that time. >> if that's all we get out of that action-- >> i about jumped out the window when i sawthe 18 and all the mess happening in front
of us. i think right now you see the packthat is separated, how they came back on the track, you got experience in the front andinexperience in the back on how to come to pit road.>> speaking of experience, here come the 54 and the 88 on the move. a couple of cup veteranslooking for the point at daytona. >> dale junior moved up behind kyle busch.>> i think these guys knew -- i think they played it smart. they gotaggressive right before the pit stop. they did their pit stop. next thing you know, theyare in the lead pack with the experienced guys that they want to be around. you havethe inexperienced guys that didn't do a great job with first time getting on pit road, kindof separated themselves into the back half
of the field. that was an interesting pitstop. >> dale junior went to pit road 21st. comesoff challenging for the lead, running in second. not only a great pit stop by his team butgetting to the speeding line and back on the track, obviously, dale junior overachieved.>> i think as you see the front of this pack, kyle and dale and a lot of these guys, theyhave raced two or three times as we have gone through the weekend. two, i think. as we havegone through the weekend. you have been on pit road, you've been through practices. istill practice every week getting on and off of pit road, because it's so hard to do.>> we promised you off the top, today's race would be entertaining. how about this? daleearnhardt junior up 30 spots. 27 for kyle
busch. ty dillon up 24 positions. you areon board with a man who won the championship last year, chase elliott finds himself 12thin the running order. still very much a part of the equation here at daytona.>>> today's coverage provided by goodyear, everything they learn making tires for thedemands of nascar inspires what rolls into your yours. goodyear, the official tire ofnascar. 47 laps into the 120 that make up today's alert today florida 30for the nascarxfinity series. >> that pack of six running along on the bottom, having ray good time right now. enjoying a little saturday afternoon drive. when theylook in the mirror, there's 20 cars that are running a couple of tenths of a second a lapfaster than them. they are getting ready to

thoude a mistake.>> an early pit road mistake you can overcome. he has a chance to overcome that.>> absolutely. >> still make a good day of it.>> you get the feeling here, because the opportunity for multiple cautions in a short period oftime, the fact that that can take out so many competitors if you were to have the big one,you really never are out of it. you have to go deep in the race before you feel like youare out of contention at a place like daytona. brad keselowski finds himself in the 20thposition. what are they saying in the middle stages of the race?>> almost had too good of a pit stop. >> we work together. worries about passingeach other getting up to speed.
>> that's really just right back to what wewere talking about. if these guys would be patience for seven or eight laps, they wouldform back up into this group. that second pack is racing harder than the first pack.they are side by side and shuffling back and forth. that's what brad was talking about.get single file and get everything formed back up before we start hurting ourselves.>> teammates working together here. maybe working against each other. bouncing againsteach other. >> bubba wallace and erik jones decided totrade a little point. >> that's right.>> that's not the best plan here midway -- before halfway through the race.>> i think that had a lot to do with the 13.

the king 7 and make it 8. heck. maybe even9. maybe they're in the back of the pack. maybe they're stalking the leader down thehome stretch. waiting to pounce. waiting to make that first move toward becoming a legend.make no mistake about it. they're out there. i guarantee it. welcome to the nascar xfinityseries. earning unlimited cash back on purchases. that's a win. but imagine earning it twice.introducing the citiâ® double cash card. it lets you earn cash back twice, once when youbuy and again as you pay. it's cash back. then cash back again. and that's a cash backwin-win . the citi double cash card. the only card that lets you earncash back twice oneverypurchase with 1% when you buy and 1% as you pay. with two ways to earn, it makesalot of other cards seemone-sided.
>>> back live at daytona. our tax slayer topof the board. kyle busch is out front. long way to go to get to the 1,700-plus he ledin 2014. dale junior is second. he won six times here in the xfinity series. the teamcar that won here a year ago regan smith is third, larson and buescher complete the topfive. we are 55 laps in, five short of halfway here at daytona. let's get a report from pitroad. >> chase elliott just took left sighs on thestop. i thought it was interesting. i asked his crew chief, what was your mindset to takeleft only? >> we ran rebound on the front of the shocks.i have done it before. we taken four tires and the tire comes out so slow. i didn't wantto take a chance. i decided the right thing
was to take two tires. tires haven't beenwearing. that was my thought process. i would like that thank xfinity and welcome aboard.>> kevin harvick, this man was your crew chief. what do you think of the call in is.>> that's been his strategy on the speedways for a long time. as a crew chief you rollwith things that you know. you try to do things that worked for you in the past. last yearit works with kasey kahne and it worked in the past with tony stewart and ernie workingtogether. they have done a lot of this speedway racing.>> remember the six i talked of earlier? >ue the jaws music.>> that's done. those guys that caught them are going to figure out how to pass them.we will see dicing up toward the front.
>> talked a lot today about bubba wallace.see him in the 6 behind ty dillon in the orange and black number 3.>> he has been pushed all day long by kyle busch. maybe he wants to try pushing himself.it looks like he knocked the 3 of ty dillon sideways. let's see.>> coming. up top. >> you think ty had enough of that?>> i think he was trying to come down and get behind his brother. it was just bad timing, which is what creates a lot of these wrecks. >> what are they saying?>> that's what they were telling him on the radio. billy was telling him, they were tryingto get down to the bottom because the bottom lane appeared to be moving much better. justthen when the hole opened up, he said get
to the bottom. it was almost perfect timing.he is having a hard time holding on to the car in the draft.>> that was a cool move right there. you saw austin dillon, he saw his brother ty to theoutside. they jumped up there and just about got messed up by bubba wallace. brendan gaughanpulled in and pushed them ahead. that's synchronized racing.>> sounds like they have been trying to get the rcr cars lined up.>> bubba wallace is now starting to drift back and in danger of losing the tail endof the group. >> sometimes you need a break. you wind upgetting turned sideways or turning somebody sideways and you are in a bad spot. you getstuck in the middle or outside and something
going wrong. i got to go back and catch mybreath. then i'm going back at it again. maybe that's what happened.>> bubba did a nice job. he was in a position he needed to be. he just got overtaken bythose three teammates and pushed him to the back. bubba is rebounding. he will hang inbehind brad keselowski. that's a fellow blue oval. he says, that's friendly territory.i will go pushm a bit. >> he crosses the start/finish line, kylebusch will have led the most laps here at daytona today. 19 circuits out front for theman that won seven times a year ago. >> that tells you how much shuffling goingon during the course of one of these xfinity races here at daytona. you can start anywhereand win.
>> i love the roof cam on the top of the 6car. you can see how these cars are dancing around. he is trying to figure out how heis going to get back up through the pack. he was in the front all day. he has to figureout how to push and shove his way back up. >> why don't you show us what kind of broadcasteryou are and put a circle around that 6 car? >> wait. there he is right there.>> how about that? >> it's hard when they are on the move.>> that's right. >> you did a nice job. let's get a reporton bubba wallace. >> when bubba slipped back several positions, you summed it up best. maybe there wasn't something wrong. he was going back to regroup.i spoke with the team. they said that was
the case. didn't communicate at all on theradio. went back, settled himself and is moving toward the front. he had a top ten finisha year ago. he is comfortable on these tracks, as comfortable as you can be. sometimes youhave to catch your bther yourself. >> sometimes it's easy to work up throughthe back because you can carry momentum and make better decisions usa come from the backand looking up through there. >> that gives you a chance to evaluate yourcar, what kind of moves you can make. if you run in the first two or four like he has,you don't know what you have if you have to make a move. he sees he has a car that hecan move with. >> qualifying wasn't clean. but the race hasbeen that. how about 65 laps to start under
green? no cautions yet today. our longestgreen flag run you saw it there a year ago, 29 laps.>> we couldn't run two and a half minutes in qualifying without wrecking. these guysare racing side by side. this is great action. they are fixing to catch a pack of slowercars. a chance for them to mess up. so far, really good driving.>> come on. you know it's a ticking time bomb. as that lap counter goes from 67 to 68 to69, the intensity picks up. it's hard racing right now. everybody seems to be somewhatorganized. as we get to the end, everybody will want to start pushing and shoving harder.>> on board with aric almirola. >> these cars, they move around so much. that'sreally the hardest part about trying to draft
with somebody is just really driving straight.especially through the tri-oval. as you go in, the car starts to get light. you movearound. cars are dancing back and forth. on the verge of out of control. it's definitelyhard to drive them straight as you are in a pack and things are moving.>> it seems like they drive better in the turns. when you are in the corners, you havemore grip than down the straightaway. pebouncing into you.>> absolutely. whether that thing is loaded in the corner and the car is suppressed intothe track, you have banking to lean on. as long as somebody stays from the center tothe right of your bumper, it's okay. >> they are light down the straightaway. especiallyin the tri-oval.
>> kyle busch the race leader in the black54, in the outside lane. he has the rest of the top five behind him as they work outsideof some slower traffic here. approaching 70 laps complete in today's event. one year ago,we had five cautions here at daytona in this race. four of the five coming after lap 70.>>> tomorrow on fox, the great american race. the season opener for the nascar sprint cupseries, noon eastern time is when our coverage begins. one of the drivers competing heretomorrow, regan smith filling in for kurt busch who has been indefinitely suspendedby nascar. driver 7 in the xfinity series. he is out front. kyle busch who was leadinghas been shuffled back to fifth. dale junior was second. but he is now dropped back, becausehe had to make an unscheduled pit stop.
>> when they made their stop, they got twotires and didn't get the car full of gas. they had to come back to change four tires, put gas in it which was early. we are getting reports when he left pit road he drove throughmore than three pit boxes. that's against the rule. he might have a loose wheel. theywill check on that as well. straight through the pit he went.>> i think the thing from looking up here, i see three pit boxes in front of him. i don'tknow if the last stall is something they use as a box. there's only three pit stalls infront of him. maybe we can get clarification on that.>> let's listen to team radio. see if we can gain insight here.>> yeah. i got a loose wheel. i don't know
how bad it is.>> he was back on pit road. they didn't address that.>> i think in order to serve your penalty on your drive-through, you can't stop. ifhe does have a loose wheel, he will have to come back in and stop in the pit box.>> you have been covering it. what are they saying?>> he says going up to speed, a loose wheel. he thinks he can ride it out until the nextstop. >> something else that happens here, whenyou start pitting under green and you come on and off pit road, the brake rotors startvibrating. >> let's get clarification on leaving thepit. the rule is you cannot drive through
more than three pit stalls. there's one, there'stwo, there's the third. that would be a fourth, but there isn't a car there.>> there's nobody in it. interesting. >> even at that, it was really close-- >> close is-- >> but it looks like maybe-- by nascar's -->> the system is black and white. it tells you whether you missed it or the no. he drovethrough the fourth box. i didn't know if there wasn't a car there, that counted. i'm learningfor tomorrow. make sure i understand. >> learning, that's for sure.>> the reason there would be no car there
is in the nascar xfinity series, only 40 carscompeting. what nascar will do sometimes is squeeze the pit lane, making that number onepit stall not an option for teams competing this afternoon. where it would be used tomorrowwith 43 cars in the race. >> check out that pack coming after the leaders.those guys are all over one another. this race is kind of-- it has been like a slinky. right now, that second pack is where all the intense battlingis. >> to clear up one other thing on the pitstall, when nascar takes the first pit stall away, they took that away so that the carthat qualifies first has to go a little bit further distance to even up the fairness onpit road to the speed line.
>> how about this? no cautions here today.46 races at daytona for the nascar xfinity series, we have never gone caution free. we'renow down to 44 laps to go. that lead group left of your screen, nine cars there. thena big draft behind them. larry? >> yeah. what-- we're getting close to what's going to be the second green flag pit stop. i feellike the teams are -- should need to go to 80 laps. that's 40to go. but you need to think about this. the last three xfinity series races here, therehas been a green, white, checkered. this is a great time to get four tires.>> it's a four-time change. a chassis adjustment to help with his balance. he has been a littlebit too free. wallace, the rookie, led 18
laps in this race. has fallen back. tryingto help him with race car down the stretch. >> i think as you see all these pit stopsstarting to happen, they don't have a good fuel reading. the first run of the race, youhave your pace laps, warm-up on pit road. you pitted a little early. you have a betterreading than what you had. you still don't have a real one. there's a possibility forsome guys to run out of gas, especially that put two tires on. not know how much fuel youput in. there's a lot of variables that the crew chief has to dance around.>> if you run out of gas, there's going to be a crash. you can't avoid it. you have tobe on the conservative side. you can see regan smith waving his hand to the cars behind him.he is coming to pit road this lap. he will
drive off turn four to the bottom. let's seeif he this can full off and everybody pit without any damage.>> had a few issues but no big accidents. well executed. the first time a circle ofstops around lap 40. the stops beginning again. as regan peels off so does his teammate chaseelliott. they will work together in the draft. let's cover the 9 stop.>> remember last stop they took left only. this time it will be right sides. they willfill him with fuel. >> regan smith is in as well. he took rightsides only the first stop. this time it's a four-time stop. regan smith pitted fromthe lead. a strong car for him today, this junior motorsports machine the winner a yearago.
>> a couple of seemingly routine pit stops.>> the caution is out. first time today. i believe it's for the tire down here. tirerolled away. got into the infield grass. with that, with 40 laps remaining, we now havea caution. >> big break for chase elliott and regan smith.they will remain on the lead lap and have their pitting done.>> they will be the leaders. when this is all said and done, this will work out greatfor chase and regan, because they will lead. dale junior, he will get a lap back to tryto get back in this race. >> iknow if he will get a lap back. he isnot our lucky dog. elliott and regan will stay on the track. he will have to race forthe lucky dog.
>> bubba wallace will get a free pass. hecame down under green. that could be big for him.>> check out the 13 of chris cochran. his tire gets away. see your skills. watch thisthing go. watch chase elliott barely miss it.>> you will see the tire right about here. it's going to go over to here.>> that's right. we will clear it so you can see it finish its way over to the grass.>> would you like to draw something? >> i will let the experts handle that. i willlet you -->> i like that. i think dale junior, i believe since he had to pit early, he will probablytake the wave around.
>> i don't think he can because-- >> that's right.>> regan smith and chase elliott will be the leaders by staying on the track.>> you are right. >> they will be behind him.>> interesting stuff. that's why sometimes we have to have extra caution laps to getall this sorted out when this type of thing happens.>> pit road here is closed. that's why everyone stayed out. that gives us an opportunity tostep aside. under caution for the first time to daytona. .>>> under caution for a number of drivers that have spent time out front. kyle busch, erik jones, kyle larson. among those that
came down the pit lane, erik jones, we sawslide through his pit stall. let's go back and take a look.>> trying to get all you can get. he came in hot. wanted to make the fastest pit stop.we talked about how difficult it is to make moves. he tried to gain extra time there.it wound up costing him. he came in the pits in third. probably going out outside the topten. >> nascar has their new pit road officingsystemless set up. eight officials in the trailer. the tire gets away. the camera willpick up that movement. red flag that stop. a nascar official will go back, review thestop and determine if it was a penalty. >> you can see those lines there. the greenline around the pit is what the nascar folks
are going off of.>> the officials in the trailer. >> they look like they're enjoying doing itas well. >> give a wave. you are on nascar on fox.38 laps to go in the season opener for xfinity. >>> back live at daytona international speedway.closing on the latter stages of the season opener here at the world center of racing.good to have you with us on fox sports 1 with michael waltrip and the man who won the 500in 2007 kevin harvick. i'm adam alexander. we have had good stuff today. 20 lead changes, eight drivers out front. dale junior driving through the field. it's going to be a funfinish. 20 lead changes. eight drivers lead the race. the two guys that made the pit stopbefore the caution, they have the track position.
how crazy is that? you are at daytona, youcan draft. they are pumped about getting track position. we still have 35 laps to go.>> it's very hard to win these races. you know that. no matter what series it's in.when you have a little bit of luck on your side, you are like, yes. i am so excited thatit went our way today. you take it and you try to make it productive and produce a resultthat you want to win. >> you said it during the break, better luckythan good. here we have a box, give you an idea how much of a difference the crews canmake. >> they are trying everything they can toget any advantage. you saw the young kid erik jones slide through this box. that lost himtrack position. the other three guys have
differing strategies. kyle busch got fourtires as did kyle larson. two tires on ty dillon. he gets out of the box first and gainstrack position. >> erik jones had problems. he went from thirdto 11th. for bubba wallace who came down pit road, he went through too many pit stallsexiting. see the red x? can't do that. he needed to be outside the white line beforehe got there. >> that's old habits die hard. that's important, you have to take your cut to the right and get out of town.>> absolutely. >> green flag in the air. 35 laps to go hereat daytona. 35 laps to go at daytona and we're celebrating track position. golly, it's adifferent world. these guys have got to battle
hard to get to the front.>> kyle larson lost track position there oncycle of stops. on board with chase elliott.>> you see chris buescher giving him as many pushes as he thinks can he get away with.you have regan leading the pack on the bottom. they are formed up really well. i can justtell you, it gets more intense every time we get closer to the end of the race. thepushing and shoving gets harder and harder. it becomes harder to pass.>> the key to bogging someone down and slowing their momentum is side drafting. when youbobble around and you dip over, that's when contact happens. that's when crashes happen.>> what's going defending champ? >> they have luck on their side. the fuelsituation, they are good to the end. his crew
chief just telling him right now, becauseof the caution, they are good for two green white checkered finishes, in case we needit. >> you can see ryan reed pulling over thereand side drafting on the 9 car of chase lliott. >> regan smith back in a familiar place, outfront. >> of course, won this race last year. secondhere in july. just took four tires on the last stop after two on the first stop. theywere going to go with two tires only on this last stop. he went through-- slid the tires a lit too much. they had to switch to a four-tire change. we will seeif it pays off. >> that's what's so tough and what makes itchallenging for crew chiefs is as awe driver,
if you slide through the stall at all or lockthem up getting on pit road pitting under green like they did, now all of a sudden yourstrategy has to change. you have to go with four.>> the one thing they all had in common is they had to get the car full of fuel. if youdon't get the car full of fuel and you know that that's the length of the last run, thenyou are in trouble. >> adversity late in the race for kyle larson.>> he hit pit road in first position. it was four tires no matter what, knowing it wouldbe their last pit stop. they gave him four tires and a tool through the window. an issuewith his mirror. he could try to tighten it, because he could not see through the mirrorbecause it was vibrating so much. you have
had tools handed to you. you multi-task behindthe wheel. >> i can tell you this, i have worked on theshifter and put vice grips. but i never tried to work on my mirror. that's the differentbetween -- that's a generation gap. my mirror vibrated,if i complained, they would say, all right, you are out of luck today. you reach up andyou held on to it to try to keep it from vibrating. >> how about that? a great example of whatit takes to stay up front. those three cars were bumping back and forth with each other, ing on to the lead. it's crazy we are sitting here with 30 laps to go thinking we have tokeep the track position in order to be able to win. that's the case. it's going to bedifficult, kevin, to race your way up through
the pack.>> yeah. you just don't want to be the weak link. what i mean by that is you don't wantthat gap in front of you. if you have a gap in front of the car, you are the guy that'sslowing your line down. when you see those first three cars in middle formed up and youget everybody formed up, your line will move faster. the better you can form your line, better off your line will go. you don't want to be the weak link.>> what about daniel suarez with kyle larson forming another line. they are making progress.the third groove drove up to the middle of the pack.>> ryan reed doing a nice job, driving for roush. drafting help for keselowski. the roush-fenwayorganization, penske never won an xfinity

might not ever lead another race at any othertrack this year against kyle busch and brad keselowski.>> give it to kyle larson. he figures out a way to get to the front. he won the 24 hoursof daytona a month ago. he has raced up front in the cup he pushed a rookie to the front.>> keeping in mind, suarez outside lane in the orange car, he is two laps down in 30th.he is up there with the lead draft. right now trying to help pull kyle larson to thelead. >> you never know who your friends are. youwill take them anywhere you can get them. if he is running 30th, he will be your buddy.>> the 6 had a big moment down the backstretch right there. that's trying to get into a lineand push and shove. you can feel the intensity
of this race picking up. everybody knows howimportant it is to be up front. >> check this out. this is a big wiggle onthe front straightaway. he is up against the car in front of him. makes a move to the inside.i don't think he meant to make that move. >> we have to make a note. lap 91, three wideon the outside pushed all the way to the lead. i didn't see that one coming. i didn't knowthat high side could make that move. >> i think that's just at aggressive natureof how hard you want to push. the more cars you can get bumper to bumper, the faster theline will go. >> prior to today-- big trouble. that's the rookie suarez up and over regan smith. the big one at daytonain the tri-oval. 42 turned us. stop, daniel.

the corner right there, that car unloads asyou come off the banking. it took a little bit too much. that's the window that you haveto push. if you get outside of the center of that back bumper the way these-- the front and back bumpers are curved, it's going to spin the car out.>> remember we see lucky versus good? there's chase elliott.>> right behind you. >> chase is lucky. his car is still rolling.he had damage. >> watch this job that the 33 of austin dillondoes. when 18 flips over the 7 -- holy-- chris buescher did a heck of a job sneaking through there.>> great job by buescher all day long.

second caution of the day. not for a tiregetting away. it's for a big crash on the front straightaway.>>> our second caution of the day with 27 laps to go has turned into a red flag. wenow know what happened to austin dillon and how he got that damage on the right rear.>> amazing job of missing the crash. they come to slow down to stop for red flag. youcan see the yellow car right there on the back of the screen. austin pulls up to stop.yellow car doesn't. that's mike wallace in the 26. he clobbers dillon.>> he hit the car behind the 42 a little bit there with his-- in the left side door. >> our second caution of the day turned intotwo cautions in one.
>> austin goes through the whole wreck, doesn'thit a thing and stops under red and has the back torn off his car.>> more than ten cars involved in this accident at lap 93. it got started when daniel suarezwent sideways coming to the tri-oval after contact from the 42 of kyle larson. listento what they say on 42. >> the 18 kept moving around. he tried togo up. he moved up too high. we started to turn him. hit the 7 and flipped him over.>> you can see they are off turn two. you nailed it. the track flattens here. it wasmore than that rookie could -- maybe anybody can stand a guy pushing himthere, turns him around. >> as you roll up off the banking, the bankingrolls off so fast. the car gets light, even

>> elliott sadler in the group, behind aricalmirola. >> larson found another groove and made itwork. bailed on top groove. dove to the inside of ty dillon. get help from chris buescher.dillon is getting a push from aric almirola on the high side.>> the two cars in front are getting out there and the guys have a chance toomentum.>> erik jones around. back across the field. the big one part two at daytona.>> they can't do this. >> stay high.>> anybody hit you? >> a horrific crash for kyle busch wlid throughthe grass and head-on into the wall. he is climbing from that car. that is an unbelievablesight. wow.
>> he hit that wall head-on. he never evenslowed down. >> there's samantha. she probably does notknow he is getting out of the car. that is a great sign. you saw her say thank you andperhaps one of our cameramen sharing the news with her. wow.>> fast car all day long. chase elliott, our defending series champion. there's where itstarted. i don't know how it started. we saw that 20 car of erik jones go around first.>> ryan scott in the top ten, part of the mix. he got damage. erik jones went acrossthe start/finish line third. >> caught a glimpse of kyle sliding throughthe grass. you see kyle here being tended to by medical officials. he is alert. obviouslytalking. that's a great sign.
>> it's got to be an incredibly helpless feelingas a driver when you are sliding through the grass like that and knowing there's not muchyou can do. >> well, for us, we have been lucky as competitorsto see this sport evolve with the safety. when you hit one of those concrete walls andyou have been hitting these safer barriers, you have no idea the difference in what itfeels like. when you hit them head-on, it's a violent impact.>> one more time at what happened. >> kyle is behind jones.>> likes like there might have been contact there.>> there you see kyle, top of your screen. >> now we will go from our blimp view. thereyou see kyle and erik jones racing together.
>> there was contact there. kyle bumps intolarson. it turns him to the left. elliott sadler hit there brendan gaughan.>> you saw the impact. we go on board with bubba wallace.>> check up, check up hard. down, down, down. keep going hard. we're in it. we're in it.>> chase elliott already beat up from an earlier accident. a front-row seat as well.>> a big wreck behind you. big wreck behind you. big wreck behind you. caution, caution, caution. we're fine. we're fine. >> i think looked like he thought he had itcleared. from the side -->> go low. go low. coming low. they are coming down. one coming down. back high. high. trackis clear. keep coming. track is clear.
>> the 14 of conley tried to avoid the crash.when he turned left, hit elliott. >> keep coming. keep coming. you are clear.back it down. >> what about that? never lifted. never letoff the gas. he and ty dillon slide right through. great job by aric almirola.>> you can see both of them into the wall. they were able to slip through.>> as was austin dillon. what a great move to miss the crash.>> lost in all of this, you saw dale junior how he laid back, didn't get any damage. heis the first car one lap down. he will get the free pass, back on the lead lap. therewill be a handful of cars on the lead lap when we go back green.>> that whole wreck started just because the
cars are light in the tri-oval. kyle was pushingthe 20 car, doing what he tried to do to advance forward. you see the 20 car just get a littlebit loose. kyle was still right there on his bumper. when he started swerving around, thatcar just shot that car out of control. >> you said it several times today, both ofyou. explain when the car is light. >> that car is light right there as kyle ispushing him. he is trying to let it have its head and go as straight as possible. thenthey become not centered anymore. as he starts to come down the track to get in line, itjust spins the car out. that's a huge hit for that 54 car. it looks like something broke.what happens is these cars get light. when they take off like that, they just start sliding.are are out of control.
>> he was trying to save it as long as hecould. he was just barely going sideways. trying to save it. it was obvious he couldn'tget it saved. >> they have stabilized order tried to theright leg. we will follow the story with kyle busch, injured in a crash here at daytona.>>> the lights are on here. the sun is setting on a saturday evening over central florida.kyle busch being loaded into an ambulance. he was injured in a crash moments ago. forthe second time today, under red flag at daytona. >> over 190 miles an hour as they come throughthe tri-oval. gets loose after the contact. trying to save it. trying to save it. wheelscut to the right. wouldn't come around for him.>> an estimated 90 miles per hour when he
went head-on into the concrete wall wherethere is no safer barrier here at daytona international speedway.>> we have seen videos of crashes where guys hit the wall at 30 miles an hour. the violentimpact it is inside the car. to triple that and to imagine what kyle must have been feelingand seeing as he slid toward that wall, it's a helpless feeling.>> there's just nothing slowing the car down, because it's not sideways. it's sideways enoughto be where you can't control it. it's just straight on into the wall right there. tough, tough hit. >> they pull kyle busch's car away. we giveyou a reset. we told you, under a red flag for a second time today. both incidents comingwith 11 cars involved. they haul away the
14 of conley, a driver running for rookieof the year. it's hard to reset the running order here under red. it doesn't make senseto do so. this is the point that you made, michael. so many of the drivers right nowbeing shown in the top ten are drivers that have got significant damage. while they willlikely be able to continue, may not be competitive. >> we have seen some be players late in thegoing. larson has pushed up with ty dillon. after that, listen to these names. david starr, aric almirola. ross chastain in the top ten. just outside of the top ten, dakoda armstrong.if these guys were able to slip through the wreck, it would be a big day for them. it'shard to tell who has damage and who doesn't. >> david starr, longtime driver in the truckseries where he has four victories. three-year
contract with tristar. he is inside the topten. ross chastain running full-time for jd motorsports. not only underdog drivers butunderdog teams. perhaps in position to shock the world today.>> you can see there's armstrong. he made it through okay. we saw damage with aric almirolaas he squeezed through.
